"Because of what I'm about to tell you, I cannot tell you my name." Her beautiful blue eyes sparkled as she said those words, but the next ones changed Katsu's life forever, "This book is yours."
He picked up the black notebook in front of him and read the two words on the cover. He opened it to find the first few pages filled with a few names scribbled down in neat cursive handwriting, mostly in green ink.
"Death Note? What mockery is this?"
He was infuriated. This girl had devised a cunning plan to get him alone and her intention was to give him a book? He threw the book down in anger.
"It's a book... That kills whoever has their name written down in it."
Confused about what has happened? Wondering who these two characters are? If I told you this happened on a Wednesday evening, would you mind if I backtracked back to the morning of the previous Monday? Good. I will. Before you wonder who I am, please, do not fret. You will meet me soon in this tale. I will reveal everything at the end.
Katsu woke up. His black hair dye was the first thing he saw that morning. He knew that it was Monday the second he saw it. The day he had to dye his hair. Despite his green eyes, he did not like his natural appearance. Purple hair does not suit someone like him.
He got out of bed and took a shower, dying his hair, brushing his teeth and getting dressed, it was the same every Monday. He found it boring.
Little did he know that he would find a way to escape this boredom within the week.
He left the room dressed in a T-Shirt which featured his favourite band. His classmates said that his choice in music was rubbish. He did not care. As he was walked out through the main hall, he heard the soft voice of his sister behind him.
"Katsu! Makoto's looking for you!"
And with that, the purple haired university student ran off, the echo of her footsteps rebounding off the paintings that hung in the grand hallway. Katsu was never sure if living in such a grand estate was a blessing or a curse, as it always seemed empty.
Katsu walked towards the dining hall. He did so every day. The maid, Makoto, made him breakfast. She was only hired a year before but she was irreplaceable in his life as his sister was. Secretly, it was one of the few things that made him happy.
"Good morning master Katsu, breakfast is on the table."
A girl in her early twenties wearing a maid uniform had opened the gold trimmed door. The regal pattern on the wood and smile upon her face were two of the things Katsu woke for every morning. Makoto Hanari was always like that, always smiling.
After breakfast, Katsu began his walk to School. He left the manor grounds and began the twenty minute journey to Shokazu's house. Katsu hated the green uniform he was forced to wear, but he knew that he had to attend school.
Walking through town, he saw many people in the same uniform as him smiling and chatting together. They were happy. He did not mind that. They were idiots in his view. If he was not so focused on the crowds, maybe he would have noticed the girl who had been following since he left the manor.
Knocking on the door, he heard a familiar voice call down to him.
"Just a second!"
Shokazu was a kind person. Katsu liked him because he was one of the few people who ever gave him a challenge. The girl not in uniform who passed by the house and bought a newspaper would be the second to give Katsu a challenge.
Shokazu opened the door. He had bright blonde hair and wore his school jacket without the sleeves. People would have called him crazy if he was not so cheerful looking all the time. Shokazu was a kind person, always stopping to help others. He once skipped class for a week so that he could nurse a cat back to health. Katsu skipped that week for different reasons.
"Hey Katsu, isn't it nice to be so carefree?"
Shokazu was the kind of person who loved life. Many girls lusted after him and many boys envied him. He only let Katsu know where he lived, however, as only Katsu shared his view on the world.
"This world needs more heroes to unite us all. It doesn't matter how happy we are if the world around us crumbles."
Katsu responded with the dark side that the two of them shared. The world needed more heroes. He said this every day to Shokazu. Today, someone overheard him. She smiled from behind the newspaper as he confirmed her thoughts.
Katsu chatted with Shokazu on the short journey to school. He did not notice the girl walk past him nor did he notice the memory stick she had dropped into his bag. She had started with her plan. The girl walked down a completely different road from them a few seconds later. She did not need to follow Katsu any more.
The two boys arrived at school. They first had tutor meetings, which was a boring time for Katsu. He did not listen to a single word the class representative said. After tutor, Katsu and Shokazu walked over to the computer block, where he was to attend a lesson of coding. Shokazu sat on Katsu's left. The seat to Katsu's right remained empty.
When the lesson was almost over, Katsu reached into his purse-like bag and grabbed what he thought was him memory stick. As he plugged it in to the computer, the girl who was waiting for that moment smiled. With her right hand she turned on the computer to Katsu's right. With her left she moved the cup of coffee she had purchased to her lips.
Katsu saved the information onto the memory stick and left the room. He did not notice that the computer next to him had been hacked. Shokazu was in too much of a rush to notice it also. When the girl had added the coding to the school system, she packed up, paid her bill and left Cuppa C. She had one more day until the meeting. She could not mess this up.
The final bell rang. Katsu woke up. He knew that Literature was boring but this was ridiculous. Shokazu had covered for him as he took a kip. Katsu grabbed his bag and left for the Chess Club's room.
Katsu and Shokazu played a lot of chess. While Shokazu played like an amateur, Katsu was the Club Captain, holding an impeccable record. Katsu was known for playing chess with one hand and a hand-held game with the other. Last week he played a fighting game. This week, he decided to play a shooter.
"Checkmate."
Katsu nearly laughed as he said the word. His opponent had been studying all his moves for a week and thought he had Katsu figured out.
"Tom, next time you wish to spy on me, be less obvious. I've played a completely different style for a week just to throw you off."
Katsu was good at detecting the flaws of others. He went back to the shooter, however, as his sentence had caused him to take a wound to the arm. A few minutes later, Shokazu asked for his help. Katsu paused the game, looked at the board for twenty seconds and responded.
"Rook to K5. Next turn, Queen to QR8. You should be able to win easily if you do that."
Katsu spoke in a deadpan style when it came to chess. When he found it to be fun, however, he spoke with enthusiasm. He returned to his game and heard Shokazu cheering a few minutes later. A smiled graced Katsu's lips.
After Chess Club, Katsu walked home. 30 minutes is a long walk if you are not with anyone. Fortunately, Shokazu decided to chill at the manor. Katsu bought a newspaper from the same stand that the girl had bought a newspaper from. The headline of the day was 'Woman kidnapped. Police baffled.'
At the manor, the help welcomed him in and presented Shokazu with some robes to wear. Katsu threw his bag on the table in the grand hall and headed to his room. A few minutes later, Shokazu emerged wearing a robe that was a little too big for him. Katsu dropped the Manga and looked at his friend and the awkward appearance.
"Hey Katsu, do you think that the person who rescues the girl from the kidnapper will be a hero?"
Shokazu had seen the headline of the paper on the floor. For a manor, the room was very messy. The floor was littered with Manga and game guides. Shokazu picked up a Manga from the pile and began to read it.
"Maybe we should become the heroes. It's a shame that the police have no leads though."
Before Shokazu could respond, a knock was heard on the door. Katsu dropped the Manga and Makoto came in the room.
"Katsu, Shokazu, you are wanted in the study,"
The study was not just a room of the manor, it was one of the wings. The amount of businesses that was owned by KamiKorp was tremendously high. Teru Mikami, the owner of the estate, was the leader of those businesses. He was in the top ten most valuable men in the country. Katsu and Kyoko, however, called him Uncle.
Katsu followed Makoto to the third room of the wing, a room which had the local chief of police in and a few detectives. They fell silent as Katsu walked into the room. Katsu looked ahead at the man in his thirties who had black shoulder-length hair and glasses that cover his entire face sitting behind the desk.
"Here he is, the one who may figure out this problem."
Teru spoke with a calm voice. He expected great things from Katsu. Shokazu, in his eyes, would be a great friend for Katsu. Shokazu was destined for great things. Katsu walked up to the desk and picked up the papers on it.
"This is the genius we have heard so much about?"
There was a lot of muttering coming from the place where the detectives were sitting. Katsu did not care. The case was a kidnapping, the very kidnapping he had read about earlier that day. Katsu looked at the list of suspects, the list of Alibi and the details of the case. Shokazu also tried working things out.
"Are you sure that this has baffled you guys?"
Katsu finally spoke. He smirked with the sentence. Shokazu was beginning to connect the pieces of the puzzle together.
"While it does seem like this man," Katsu pointed to a suspect, "Had the most reason to do the kidnapping, I think it's more likely that another person is the real kidnapper."
Shokazu smiled and rushed to his friend's side.
"Katsu's right, it is another person. Takeshi Obata!"
"He's right." The police were shocked with what they had heard. "Lieutenant Takeshi Obata did this. He was the one who made the arrests and the reports have him announce the kidnapping at 8:30. The same time the girl went missing."
"He made the suspects lie about where they were so they would be incarcerated. He would have gotten away with it too, but he forgot about the fact that he had been added to the list of suspects as well."
"So, raid his house tomorrow and you should find the girl. Just one question though," Katsu turned to face the police chief, "Why is the girls name not included in this report?"
The police chief was confused for a few seconds. He had his best guys working on this case for a week and then these two teenagers walk into the room and solve it in an instant.
"The girl was only identified by a nickname. We couldn't trace her back to where she lived or anything."
Katsu discarded his smile. He turned to face Teru.
"Uncle, you knew all along who did it. Ever since the case was brought to you this afternoon, you had known the culprit. Why were you testing me?"
Teru let loose a snide smile, his handsome face tainted by the evil behind it.
"Because Katsu, I know you. You would find this case as easy as I did. I needed to check to see if you were still the same genius as you were the day I met you. And yes, you are the right type of person to succeed as the head of KamiKorp."
Katsu did not respond. He merely turned and left, Makoto and Shokazu following him as he left. Katsu knew that all Teru wanted to do was to prove to his friends that a nobody like him can be the rightful successor to the company, despite not being a blood relation.
As Katsu walked down the grand hall, he saw his sister. Kyoko was a cheerful girl, three years older than Katsu. She had her friends round. While Katsu had forgone his purple hair, Kyoko embraced it, using it to stand out in a crowd.
"Thank you for everything Katsu!"
Not a day went by without Kyoko thanking her brother. When their mother died back when they were little, she had to do all the work around the house and brought up Katsu on her own. Ten years ago, Teru walked into the orphanage and saw the two of them playing chess. Teru told them that if they could beat him, he would adopt the two of them. Kyoko and Katsu won. Kyoko remembers that she did not even remotely help in the game.
Katsu and Shokazu continued walking to the room. A few hours past and Katsu waved goodbye to his friend. They would see each other the next morning. Katsu jumped into bed, still in his uniform, and fell asleep.
The girl followed the two schoolboys again the next day. She had a few more things to do before she could start her plan. She walked into a crowd of girl going to school and began to chat to them, using them for cover. She needed Katsu to trust her. If he got suspicious then her plan would crumble.
When Katsu arrived at school, he reached for his timetable that he kept in his shirt pocket. He could not find it. He assumed he must have lost it in his sleep. In reality, he had lost it the previous afternoon, when a girl had spilt some of her milkshake on his top and she had cleaned it.
The lesson after lunch and before the end of school, Katsu was asleep again. He hated Literature. It did not excite him. The teacher noticed him sleeping and decided to ask him a question about the text.
"Katsu! From what play is the following line from: 'Alas poor Yorick! I knew him well.'"
Katsu woke up with a grunt, checked the time and considered going back to sleep. The girl in front of him was eager to answer the question but Katsu stood up anyway.
"None. The line is a misquotation of a scene from Hamlet. 'Alas poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio.' is the correct quote."
Katsu did not have to pay attention to be top of the class. Makoto had read some of those plays to him the year before. He began to wonder why he even bothered to turn up to lessons anyway. A girl walked by the classroom, confirming that he was in that class.
The girl had walked into reception and received a timetable and a student ID card. She had changed the school database and so now was accepted as a student. The perfect disguise.
I have not revealed her appearance yet. Katsu hasn't noticed her yet. Why would I describe something so important so early?
Dinner that evening was chicken. The dining room was illuminated by the candles and the many people who turned up were chatting. It was a meeting of all the important business partners and project leaders of KamiKorp. Not too interested in the conversations were two schoolboys in school uniform.
Katsu saw his sister chatting with a newspaper company. She was that kind of person. She never stopped relaxing, even when at such a formal party. Shokazu was talking with the head of a hospital, trying to get a job there. Katsu was listening but not caring about the situation, occasionally getting told that he was as handsome as Uncle had said.
The time to eat had come. The guests all had their seats chosen for them. As usual, Katsu was placed next to Uncle, with Shokazu sitting next to both Katsu and Kyoko. Once the guests all fell silent, Teru stood up and began his speech.
"Ladies and Gentlemen. I invited you all here today for two reasons. The first is so that we can all work together and shape a better future. The second is to introduce you all to my right hand man. Please stand up Katsu."
The whole table applauded Uncle as he finished the speech. Katsu stood up and turned to face the table of people. If it was not for his sister being so out of place in her jeans and T-Shirt, he may have panicked.
"I applaud you all in your desires to work with this company. Together, we shall shape the future into one which is perfect for us all. We shall make perfection not an idea but a reality. So all of you, I declare you to be my friends. As friends, we shall always be there for each other and make the impossible possible."
He sat down to a massive applause. Even Uncle thought the speech was brilliant. It was obvious that Katsu was going to inherit the company, even to strangers. Kyoko was proud to be his sister and Shokazu, the envy of many, respected him. It looked like his life would be perfect.
And with that, we skip to the next day. To the morning of the evening that opened this story. At this point, our tale truly begins.
They almost noticed her today. She walked behind them and look anxious. She was wearing the uniform like everyone else but was trying to get noticed... Even if only slightly. Today, she had to become more than a hacker and a thief, she had to become an actor.
She arrived in school with a nervous look on her face. She was approached by two girls from the drama club.
"Hey, why are you so nervous?"
Exactly as she had planned. Two girls from her class had walked up to her and tried to comfort her. She had planned this out to the nearest centimetre. She knew when these girls arrived at school, what lessons they took and how to make them like her. She almost smiled knowing that the past two days had not been wasted.
"I-I-I..." The timid act was easy to pull off, "I've been ill and couldn't attend lessons until now. I'm in class 2B, will you please show me where to go?"
The girls walked with her. Shokazu, who was sitting on a nearby bench, was watching her slightly. He wondered who she was and why she was so nervous. Katsu, who was sitting next to him however, did not care.
"She's better off not having a boy like you approaching her. Someone as handsome as you would make her even more nervous."
Blunt and straight to the point. He should have recognised her as being the girl who spilt milkshake over him two days before, but he was not caring enough to pay that much attention. They stood up and went to class 2A, their class.
He noticed that the girl was in the first two lessons with him. She sat behind him in Literature and two in front of him in Maths. Every now and then, she would turn around and upon seeing him look at her, quickly turn away. If Katsu had been paying attention to her over the past week, he would have spotted the obvious ploy.
But he always made that mistake. He never paid attention to others unless they interested him. Katsu may have been a genius but he was an idiot. That sounds odd doesn't it?
At break time, Katsu went to the study centre and napped as he always did. Shokazu was busy studying for the text next lesson but Katsu just fell asleep. Some people looked at him like he was an idiot but the staff members knew that waking Katsu up would be idiotic. Katsu was top of the class in every subject, after all. They knew he needed sleep.
The girl was also studying but with the two friends she had made earlier. She was making her intentions clear by gazing out and staring towards Katsu every now and then. Deception and timing was everything in this game.
The next few lines are lines of dialogue between the girls. In honesty, I hate this style of writing as much as you would hate listening to it in reality. If it wasn't needed, I'd cut it out. Stupid girls.
"Hey," the girl spoke up and pointed towards Katsu, "who is that guy?"
The other girls looked towards the table and a few of them swooned, Shokazu looked really handsome in the light and he looked so studious that the girls wished they were there with him.
"That's Shokazu Kyota, the class rep for 2A. He's famous around here."
"Yeah, and his beautiful skin makes him so dreamy."
"I heard he once rescued a bird and nursed it back to health."
"How dreamy."
"Why does Katsu always get the chance to hang out with him?"
"Did you hear? Katsu is always in the top ten for his exams."
"Yeah, so am I."
"No, not in class, in the country. He seems to know all the answers without even trying."
"I don't believe you."
"My Dad is the manager of a hospital. Last night, he went to a business party at Teru Mikami's house. Teru practically announced Katsu as his successor there!"
"Wait, so that sleeping person next to the man of my dreams in going to become the head of a multinational business?"
"I wish I was in 2A."
And so on. Sorry for subjecting you to that torment. You are the true hero for bearing that tirade of hell that is the life of teenage girls.
The girl was not in any more of Katsu's lessons. If she was then Katsu would get suspicious. She was lucky that he had partied too hard the night before and was too tired to pay attention. A professional chess player like him would notice something wrong in a heartbeat under any other circumstances.
At lunchtime, she walked over to class 2A. This was the moment she needed. The time where her plan came together. She waited outside the door of the class and peered in, waiting for one of the girls to ask her what she wanted. Looking nervous was needed.
"Hey, what are you doing here?"
A girl from the class approached her. Katsu turned to face the door, slightly intrigued by the new girl. Finally. Some description of this girl. Maybe even a name! She had light brown hair and beautiful blue eyes. Her face looked timid by it was coated with a virgin skin, safe from blemishes. He hair was nearly hip length and was as straight as two rulers.
"I'm... I'm," The timid act suited her, "I'm here to talk to him!" He gestured towards Katsu, who moved the Rook into position and declared Checkmate against the flabbergasted Shokazu.
"You mean Shokazu? Right?" Nobody was a friend of Katsu. Very few people found his intellect possible, the rest were afraid of what he would do if he was angry, as he was known for having a lot of money.
"No! I mean Katsu! Katsu Aoki!" Everyone in class was shocked. Even if Katsu was slightly handsome, next to Shokazu he was unnoticeable. He was just a lazy rich boy in the eyes of many.
Shokazu nudged Katsu twice and winked at him. Katsu stood up and walked over to the girl. He could feel the whole class watching him as he walked over. He did not care. When a girl asks for you instead of your best friend then you go and talk to her.
The two of them looked at each other. She looked in supposed awe while he looked at her in a way which asked: Why? She knew that this was the moment she was waiting for, the reason she came to the town. She could not mess this up.
"Katsu," Her shyness went away instantly, "I cannot stop thinking about you. Do you want to meet up after school?"
Two questions instantly arose in Katsu's mind. The first was 'Who is this girl?' the second was the questioned posed. Katsu considered it briefly and responded with.
"Sure, I'll meet you at the gates after school," He then took her hand, something that she could not predict, "You have skin like an angels, please may you bless me with your name oh sweet maiden?"
That surprised everyone. While Katsu did not seem like it, he was a master of poetry and plays. He secretly and anonymously submitted the script for the drama club play last year. He also volunteered Shokazu to be the lead, just as a joke.
"I'm, I'm, I'm," Timid again. She had no idea what to say. The green eyes looking into hers were supposedly too captivating. "I'm Sakura, like the trees."
"My sweet Sakura, you have a good name. You have beauty beyond that of the spring and charm beyond that of an angel. Gazing upon you is like a dream forevermore from which I do not wish to ever wake up from." She did not know it but that was a line from the play. "My name is Katsu, but you already knew that."
He thought that this girl had fallen in love with him at first sight. In a way, he was true. He was everything she desired. The class thought her to be a gold digger and after she left, they communicated such thoughts directly to Katsu, who did not give a response.
At the end of school, Katsu picked up his bag and told Shokazu to tell the chess club that he was busy. He met up with Sakura at the gates and walked into town with her. He sealed his fate that day.
The date went as any day would go, they went to the movies, they went to Cuppa C, they took a walk in the park. I'll skip the details. She seemed like she was happy but it was all fake. He was just killing time. In the park together, at around 7. The Sakura petals on the ground graced the two of them with a blessed appearance.
"Katsu," This was her final act. When this was over, she could become who she really was, "I think we could finish of this date in a wonderful way." She brought her lips close to his ear, he could feel her breathing and found it to be truly magnificent. "How about we go back to your place and have some fun."
If it was not for the brilliant acting and the natural instincts Katsu had, after all, he was a teenage boy, he would have declined. But Sakura was a brilliant actor and so he fell for it. He led her back to his house.
"Because of what we're about to do, can you not tell anyone I'm here? I'll like to keep this a secret from your family."
Sakura needed the privacy. If she was known to be in the manor, the whole plan would fail. Katsu grabbed her hand and snuck into the manor. They went up to the room and she sat on the bed, took off her jacket and picked up the Manga Katsu was reading a few days before.
"So Lelouch got himself a new Knightmare? Awesome!"
She seemed not to care about the reason she came up to the room. He could not think of a response to what she had said.
"Sakura? What's going on?"
Sakura looked at Katsu from the bed, giggling at a joke in the Manga. She reached into her bag and took out a Black Notebook and threw it onto the bedside table. She then grabbed the hair dye remover and stepped into Katsu's private bathroom. As he heard the shower running, he heard her call out to him.
"Don't call me Sakura anymore unless I turn up at school. From now on, I'm..."
"What?"
Katsu was outraged at what he had heard but waited patiently when he realised that there was a partially naked girl alone with him in the room. She emerged a completely different person, her hair bright green and her expression blank and serious. She was wearing some of Katsu's clothes, a black T-Shirt and some blue jeans.
"Right, I'm ready now. That was an annoying day, pretending to be a girl named Sakura." She jumped onto the bed and took something out of her bag. She hid it from Katsu's view. "I can't believe you didn;t realise that I chose that name based on your hair colour!"
Katsu stood up, he walked to the desk near the table where Sakura had thrown down the Notebook. He was tempted to pick it up but something stopped him. He turned towards this strange girl who had caused him so much trouble.
"If you're not Sakura, what is your name then?"
The girl looked at him and stared into his eyes. Blue and green combined in mid air but eventually, she smiled.
Katsu looked at the writing, the first name on there was 'Ken Gray' and then a few blots of green ink. He looked at the other names and stopped when he read one of the last names written down, succeeding a long paragraph of text. 'Takeshi Obata.' The same guy who was responsible for the kidnapping a few days before.
"You're kidding? A book that kills people?"
He could not believe this. A book that kills people. Who would believe that?
"I didn't believe it at first but seriously, write down a name while imagining the persons face and they will die of a heart attack 40 seconds later." She took something out of her bag, a small leaflet, "This explains the rules in detail. I wrote it after coaxing the God of Death into telling me everything about it."
He started reading the rules, they seemed like a practical joke. Someone was messing with him. But... He knew something was odd. This girl had obviously done a lot of planning with this. He grabbed the TV remote and turned on the news. He hated the reporter. He pulled out a pen and almost wrote down the name. He stopped for a second and looked at Sakura.
"So, you're telling me that if I wrote that persons name down in this book, he would die less than a minute after I do the deed?"
Sakura nodded. She revealed the gun from behind her back. She held it to her head. The silver Beretta 92 in her hand was pointed to a vital point on her head.
"Katsu, write down a name of someone, anyone, on live TV. If they're still alive a minute after, I will pull the trigger. If you don't want me to pull the trigger, tell me and I'll become your slave."
She was serious. Katsu could tell from the look in her eyes. He looked at that reporter and wrote down the name. The next 40 seconds were the longest of his life. A girl had a gun behind him and the man on the TV in front of was talking with the co-host. As the final few seconds approached, Sakura moved the gun away from her head and pointed it at the TV.
"Three, two, one." She gestured at the TV as if firing, at the same time, the man fell from his chair as if he had been shot. A heart attack. This was not a joke. "And he's dead. There. I chose my nickname. Call me Seven."
And with that, she took her gun and bag and left for the room next door, the spare room never used by anyone. Katsu fell over, his head pounding. He had killed someone. He dropped the Notebook onto the Desk and threw the Leaflet on the desk next to it.
He was a killer. He grabbed the chess pieces on the floor and set up a game. This girl had outsmarted him. But then he began to laugh, he could use this power to make KamiKorp the most valuable company in the world. He grabbed the leaflet and began to read.
He did not know when he fell asleep. He just knew that he now had the power to change the world. He knew what he needed to do.
And that ends the first part of this tale. More shall follow but for now, I bid thee farewell. Not only are we ending this part, but we are saying goodbye to the innocence of Katsu.

A comment about the low number of stories.
I have written some more, The Chosen, The Void of Everest and Katsuro are all beyond their first chapter. Unfortunately these stories are longer and I have writers block on all three of them. I am redoing the Void of Everest because I dislike my style at the time of writing.
Sorry, you'll have to do with the I've got at the moment.

Sors Castrum Background
This started Gaia.
I decided to write a short story for no reason last year. I spent a week on it.
I decided on the plot prior to the creation of the story. There are a few references to real life, like the main character is called Josh because that is the name of someone who has inspired me. His real name is spoofed at the very end.
There is a two year gap between this and Katsuro. After this story was written, I decided to make the characters go into another story. Unfortunately for the characters, they become minor characters. The new story is Katsuro, which I am stuck on. Sors Castrum is a prequel and written from a first person perspective.
Where is it based? On an island. The islands contain the normal humans, and no magic is ever allowed there. Gaia is made of seven islands, the 6small ones which contain no magic, and the big one which contains elves, pixies and demons.
The people of the towns know nothing of magic. The castle is actually one of the 6 castles of terror, as Duke didn't have a castle. He had a city.
No. I am not inspired by Twilight. I dislike Twilight.

Sors Castrum
I felt its breath on my neck. The midnight air was freezing my water-soaked body. There was no warmth except that of the breath. I suddenly felt a stabbing pain in my neck; blood trickled down, the rain made that blood run faster. The fangs had ripped into my neck.
At least I died in the arms of the one I loved.
It started last Thursday, I had just had another boring English lesson with Mrs Catwick, a teacher who had been working at my school longer than any other member of staff. We were learning about Lord of the Flies, a book so boring that I would rather eat it than read it. The bell had just rung and I left the class. I was walking back to my Year Room when I saw my best friend, Hannah.
She has been my best friend for years. Our small, riverside town was a town divided into groups. When I was younger, I noticed not the groups but the people within the groups. Now that I am 16 I notice how we cannot live in harmony. There were the guys I called the bullies, they lived on the dark side of town. Their gang consisted of people bent on violence for bragging rights. They knew not of compassion, loyalty or honour but only attention. There were the snoots, cheerleaders and people so vain that they believe that everyone who is not in their group is scum worthy of life only as a cockroach. I concur when they are talking about the bullies but not everyone is like that, they too were blind to how people cannot be sorted. Only me, Hannah, Megan Edwards, Mike Translast and Katie Johnson were normal in our town.
Hannah was, and to this day she still is, beautiful. She has long, flowing hair that smells like a waterfall gently trickling over an oasis of pleasure, skin more perfect than the world itself and wonderful sea-blue eyes that shone like a beacon of hope in this tyrannical sea of troubles that is school.
"Hey Josh."
On a normal day, her voice would have been that of an angel, sweet and lovely like chocolate, but today was not a normal day. Her voice has a feeling of dread hidden behind it like a magician’s assistant behind the box; the dread was dwelling deep inside her.
"What's wrong?" I enquired. I was suddenly annoyed by the crowd around me, their chatter prevented me from hearing her voice, and I wanted to do nothing but talk to her.
"Josh, I'm..." She hesitated, as if about to admit a terrible secret, "fine. I'm perfectly fine."
Hannah usually did this when something was wrong. Over the time I have known her I knew that the best thing to do was to wait. I quickly changed the topic to one about dream holidays. I wished to go to a luscious beach while she wanted to go to Paris to do some shopping. In all honesty, I didn't care where we went, only that I would go there with her.
After saying goodbye, I headed off to my final lesson, which was maths. I don't care about perpendicular bisectors; I care about one thing only. Hannah.
I met up with her at the gate when class had ended; somehow I had got a B in my last test. That was good but not as good as Megan. She got an A. We started walking home.
"Josh, about earlier... I'm sorry that I can't tell you what's wrong."
"Hannah, you don't need to worry. I have something I need to tell you."
We stopped; she looked at me in her own peculiar way,
"What is that then? What do you need to tell me?"
The time had come. I was ready to tell her.
"Hannah." I paused for a moment, "I love..."
There was a deafening sound of metal hitting metal, this kind of stuff always happened to me. I never was able to finish the sentence. There was always something different going wrong. I turned around and gasped. Two cars had crashed. It wasn't pretty. Blood flowed from the pile of smoking wreckage all the way to the pavement beneath my feet. I tried to move toward the crash but I couldn't, I was paralysed by fear. Hannah ran towards one of the two bodies, she bent down and tried to give the body CPR. I couldn't help but feel a little jealous of that dead man. I looked at the other body. It was Mrs Catwick, barely recognisable in her bloody state.
Hannah stood up, brushed away a tear and walked towards me. There was some blood on her lip. She grabbed my hand and turned me away from the horrific scene. There was a small crowd gathering around the scrapheap. She started walking me towards our street. I didn't want to think about the crash so I quickly thought of something else to say.
"Hannah, do you want to come round for dinner tonight?" I asked her.
"I'm sorry Josh," She replied, "I just ate."
We kept walking for a while, I noticed a piece of glass on the floor, and in the reflection I saw my hand, the very hand holding Hannah's.
After our departure, I thought about the crash. I couldn't get it out of my head, two lives were taken and I had just stood there doing nothing. I hated that I didn't look like the brave one of the group. Hannah had tried to save a life while I acted like an infant. She tried to be the hero I wanted to be.
Sleep that night came surprisingly easy, I simply watched some Anime until Midnight and that had tired me to the extreme. My dreams were full of friendly felines frolicking in flowers. I have always liked animals; they are simply friends that were a little less human than us. It's not as if humans were perfect anyway, we're not all Hannah.
I woke up the next day ready for anything, except school. I didn't have any lessons with Hannah that day. I was blessed with luck unimaginable when I found her at the school gates the next day. One glance at her beautiful figure was all I needed to get through an entire week of sorrow. We started speaking.
"Hannah, isn't it weird that there was a fatality yesterday and Halloween is on Sunday?"
Hannah somehow looked shocked at this, she replied swiftly with,
"Josh, you're being a little paranoid. But now that you mention Halloween, I..." She paused yet again, this was odd, and she was never like this before, "Would like to invite you to my party. It's my birthday party, this Halloween."
I was surprised; she never usually invited anyone round her house or to any of her parties. It was always a family affair with her.
I quickly, maybe too quickly, thanked her and we quickly departed for our lessons. I wasn't lucky enough to see her again all day. I had nothing exciting until English last lesson. As Mrs Catwick was slightly living impaired at the time, we had a substitute teacher. I ended up just talking to Megan all lesson. We agreed to go to the local coffee shop, Cuppa C, after school.
We headed out through the gates. I saw Hannah fly past us. She didn't look like she was angry but one look at that walked could tell me that she was determined to do something. I longed to chase after her and helped her with her quest but it wasn't so. I would never break a promise to a friend. Megan and I went down to Cuppa C and we both ordered a nice rich tea. Mine contained a lot of sugar and so tasted sweet. Cuppa C was a coffee shop that I used to frequent, as did many students from our year including Mike and his girlfriend Sophie.
Megan and Mike went out around a month ago. They were happy but three days beforehand, on Tuesday, Sophie, the head cheerleader, seduced Mike into going out with her. Megan was too upset to think. Her heart had been smashed into a thousand pieces. Upon seeing him, I turned to comfort Megan and tell her that she shouldn't do anything stupid.
I was too late. Megan had already stood up and started pointing at Mike. After screaming profanities at him and bursting into a fountain of tears that had a seemingly never ending source, she ran out of the side exit. I quickly placed down the money needed and chased after her, spilling my tea on my bag as I left.
I found her on a bench in the park sobbing gently. She had almost finished crying but the sadness was still there, I pulled out my picture of the three of us and Katie, I had drawn it myself weeks beforehand. It was a reminder that we were a family, there for each other forever. Her crying soon stopped after seeing the Anime-style drawing of us. She turned to face me, still holding my drawing.
"Why doesn't anyone love me like you love Hannah? I want what you have. I know you haven't told her yet Josh. You were always a scaredy cat at times."
I recoiled when she said this, I didn't know that my ex-best friend had worked out I liked her. I loved Hannah. She was my world, I quickly decided to respond to Megan’s question upon realising she was expecting an answer,
"Meg, I think you may have fallen into one of the traps that have been laid down by the very society we idolise. Maybe you need to open up your heart to everyone and everything. At the very least, I find that my music and art helps me with a lot."
People have always been calling me smart. I do a lot of random stuff to simply pass the time. My arts were all that mattered to me... After Hannah.
"Josh, you're right. I know what I should do." The tears had completely subsided from her face and that made me smile. "I'm going to the person who I think, nay, I know will help me the most."
She ran off towards the town. I smiled at seeing her happy. Happiness is what makes the world go round; it is what makes life worth living. Happiness is the meaning of life. We are born free, so why mast we captivate ourselves with society around us?
I spent the rest of the day drawing pictures of us. Me, Hannah, Megan and Katie, the four people who matter the most. My wall was full of pictures like these, I wondered if I was actually getting good at drawing like this.
I fell asleep to my own Anime this time, a little movie about how people can suddenly change into cats. It was fun drawing them and at the very least, it made me laugh. I fell asleep and dreamt about more ideas for my Anime.
The next day was dreadful; the rain was a waterfall of torment. I decided to simply stay inside and perfect my movie. It was beginning to look awesome. I guess that it wouldn't take me too long to complete it.
I had woken up around One O’clock in the afternoon; I went downstairs at eleven to check the weekly news channel. After seeing the car crash site, and almost vomiting at the horrific sight, I saw that there was a worse piece of news. Daniel Edwards, Megan’s father, was the newscaster around town. He showed us a sight that was almost too terrible to even apprehend. A room, with corpses of children and a mother. I knew these children. I had played with them in the past. They lived near Hannah. I wished for her safety.
"A note was found in the upstairs bedroom where it has appeared that the father of the children, Mr Longcross, has hung himself. The note reads as follows, 'Dear villagers FLEE! The legends are true. They took the lives of my family. My darling Linda, gone. I cannot go on. Leave the town NOW!'"
My father, Barry Mansfield, gasped at this; he turned towards my mother, Lily, and whispered something to her. Naturally I wondered what about the legend mentioned in the note.
"Dad, what legend is he on about?"
My dad sighed; he looked at me and looked on the verge of tears.
"The legend is that of Baron D'Viat. He killed everyone in the village. He lived in the castle on the hill. The Castle of Fate. When he died, no-one moved in. There are also rumours that this place is haunted. We are apparently in the battlegrounds of a long war. That is the legend... These creatures are real. I saw one. It fled from the house. I entered the house and saw that it had killed the family... All of her family," He gestured towards mum, who was crying like Megan was the day before, "She was only just spared, she hid underneath her dead sisters body. If it wasn't for the fact that we had a date that night then I may not have found her in time. It was Halloween, 18 years ago."
It was a horrible story, I suddenly felt queasy. I ran upstairs to focus on my art. I suddenly got a phone call from Meg, I answered instantly.
"Josh, don't go to Hannah's party tomorrow. Something bad is going to happen."
"I..." I thought about it, it was perfect, I would tell Hannah that I loved her at the party, "have to, Meg. Sorry."
I threw down my phone. It broke. I didn't care. It was time for me to sleep. I dreamt about the very same cats as I did a couple of nights ago.
I woke up the next day at around 2pm. I quickly sorted out everything for tonight, the most evil night of the year. Fortune had smiled on me for the rain had stopped. I decided to draw my feelings to compliment Hannah further; it was my plan to tell her I loved her that night.
I left the house at 7pm. I was consistent. Dark clouds started gathering overhead. I heard the rapturous sound that is thunder. I hastened myself; I was wearing my dad's best suit. It was white and I wore a red tie that had belonged to my grandfather. It was all perfect, except for the cloud hanging ominously above me.
I knocked on the door; I saw that Hannah was dressed as an angel, accurate to how I feel about her. I saw that some people we said we didn't like were partying too. I didn't care; I only care about the girl that was in front of me. We talked for a long time. At around 9pm I was going to tell her I loved her when her mother burst in and yelled that it was time to cut the cake. I waited until 10pm to try again but a fat person charged right past us at the wrong time.
At 11:30, I finally found her again. I began to tell her.
"Hannah, you are awesome I think that I lov..."
There was a piercing scream from the hall; someone found a dead body in the cupboard. The dead body was that of the fat person from earlier. I felt sorry for him but then I turned around to see that Hannah's parents were blocking the exit. They both began to show some fangs, I turned to face Hannah but she too had fangs out, ready to strike. I did all I could.
I ran like the lightning that thundered outside.
I smashed through the glass, leaving behind my pictures. I could hear the roar of footsteps behind me and the screams of the guests. I wasn't about to become someone’s meal. I jumped into the river, it was too cold. I swear that I had chosen the worst place to go; it was either death by freezing or death by fangs. I reached the other side.
I saw Hannah above me, I thought she was going to attack but she simply dragged me out of the river and hugged me. I could hear a bell in the distance, it couldn't have been midnight, and it was too early. I finally saw the girl of my dreams, I was about to speak but she put her finger to my lips and spoke instead.
"Josh, I saw your pictures, I know what you are going to say and let me say that I feel the same way. I have always felt the same way." She paused for a second but then she tried to continue, we both spoke the same words at the same time.
"I love you."
She leant in and kissed me. It felt as if the kiss lasted a lifetime, if it did then it would have been a lifetime well spent. My perfect world. It was the best thing ever to happen to me.
When she finished, she looked at me, the final bell rung. It was The first of November. I looked at Hannah but somehow couldn't find her. For a second I thought of how everyone in the world were like the stars that shone above us, we all emit a different light but we are all beautiful. I looked up to see the castle, and that brought me back to the real world. I felt something grip me behind me, I knew it was Hannah.
I was about to turn but Hannah intervened, she spoke,
"Sorry, Josh, this is the only way we can exist together. I love you." Her words sounded final but yet was still my angel speaking. I loved her. I couldn't think of a better end. I could feel her changing into a monster. I shut my eyes and prepared myself for my death by the monsters hands.
I felt its breath on my neck. The midnight air was freezing my water-soaked body. There was no warmth except that of the breath. I suddenly felt a stabbing pain in my neck; blood trickled down, the rain made that blood run faster. The fangs had ripped into my neck.
I stumbled forwards towards the river. I slowly dragged myself to the edge. My body was slowly changing. I couldn't see anything different in my reflection but I sensed the change. My teeth were growing faster, my eyesight was getting sharper and my reflexes were getting more... Cat like. I turned towards Hannah and saw her through the tirade of water that was before us. She looked like she was saying something but I couldn't quite hear her. After that, everything went blacker than the castle that stood menacingly above us.
Was death the end to this story? Sadness, murder, fatality? Is that the end? Never. Death is never the true end.
I woke up. I was in the castle. How could I tell? I could I have known? Was it the stars outside that gave me the answers I desired? Was it the darkness of the room that gave me the answer to the mystery that it had conjured? Or was it the feel of belonging that had suddenly overcome me.I looked around. The entire place looked almost unreal, it was too dark for words and too menacing for possible human inhabitation.
In the corner I saw something shine, it was beautiful. I couldn't quite make it out because of my drowsiness but somehow, I knew what it was. It was Hannah, the angel of beauty whose heart is my heaven.
I knew that the world was just opening up for me. I could feel myself growing stronger. Was this what true love was like? I was becoming something inhuman. It doesn't matter if you're a boy or a girl. It doesn't matter if your human or not. Love is love. And that love is what makes the world go round. Love will live for always, forever in our hearts.
“Josh, if one of us bites someone that they love, instead of hell they become one of us. We get immortality. Isn't that great Josh? We'll live forever! Together! Just, drink blood when the time comes. You'll know when that is.”
“Hannah, if I'm just like you then does that make me perfect?”
We laughed and ended up talking until dawn. I wasn't feeling sleepy. I had never felt more awake than when I was with her.
We walked into school the next day hand in hand. Me and Hannah. Our love was greater than anything else in the world. I saw Megan run up to me.
"Josh! I'm glad you're alright. Guess what? I got myself a girlfriend! Katie!"
Were I to say that I wasn't surprised, I would be branded a liar. We can never predict the actions of others. I felt happy for her though, love must flourish no matter what stands in the way. We continued walking. The two leaders of the bully gang walked up to us. Mark Stead and Mark Hadyou.
"Look here, it's the ugliest girl in the world."
"Yeah, let’s hit her!"
The two started to attack Hannah; I did what I had never done before. I became a hero. I jumped in the way, feeling the blow of their ape-like fists against my skull. I was about to attack again when I heard a teacher yell behind us,
"JOSH! MARKS! GET TO MY OFFICE NOW!"
I went to the office, despite my wish to stay with Hannah. I explained that the bullies were just being mean but the teacher wasn’t listening. He gave us all detention for a week. All that meant to me was less time with Hannah.
When I left school, I went home to say goodbye to my mum and dad.
That night, Hannah and I sat in our armchairs. We grabbed our glasses full of the red liquid we obtained earlier that day. The television showed that the two Marks had died earlier that day… from shock. I turned to face Hannah. We smiled.
"They were a better meal than they were a person."
We laughed and decided it was time. We turned into bats and flew out of the dark castle. Our castle. The Castle of Fate.
24 Hours and a Background Information
24 Hours and a Deck of Cards is inspired by Clannad, an Anime I was watching and will recommend to anyone. I have the visual novel and was playing it.
I took a route on Clannad VN that got me Kappei's Light Orb. The story was beautiful but I was left wanting more at the end. So I decided to type.
This story has no other background. If it was set in any world, it would be set on one of the 6 secondary islands of Gaia. But it's all inspired by Clannad.

24 Hours and a Deck of Cards.
"Was it fate?
"I saw her every day. One seat away from me. Always in front of me.
"She never noticed me. And when she did, it was because of my misbehaving. I wasn't who I wanted to be back then. I was nothing to anyone and nobody was anything to me.
"She never noticed me, nor I her.
"But then it happened. Who knew that 24 Hours would change my life so much.
"24 Hours and a Deck of Cards..."
The dark haired boy walked to school. His dark green uniform felt like it was dragging him down. He hated this walk. Every single day he stepped on the many flower petals that had fallen from the nearby trees. Every day many people walked past him, smiling as they spoke about what they had done the day before. He hated them. He hated all those who ran around with their friends, laughing.
He never ran to school. He did the opposite. He was always late, despite being there early. He hated the place too much to ever enter class on time. He preferred to sit outside on the bench until someone saw him and made him go to class. He wondered why he even went in the first place. Maybe he was holding out for some chance that he may find something there that he loved. But as the seasons went on, he doubted it more and more.
He took the coins out of his pocket as he entered the school gates. A few days ago he decided to leave school in the middle of lessons and get himself a burger. He paid with the lone note he had and received change. Nobody noticed he was gone.
Well, I say nobody noticed...
...Someone did. He did not notice them notice. He did not care.
He shuffled the coins around in his hands. One of the two coins fell, the one with the larger value, and began to roll out the school gates. The school bell rang as it fell but he did not care. He just walked to find what he dropped.
It took him a few minutes but he did not care. He found the coin just outside the school gates, hidden behind a couple of flowers. He grabbed it with haste and in this haste he accidentally pulled up the flowers as well. He still did not care. He put the flowers in his pocket with the coins.
"Hey kid,"
A voice called out to him. Wordlessly, he turned to face the owner of this mysterious voice.
"It's not nice to pull up flowers."
The boy sighed. He did not care. Two purple flowers meant nothing to him. The old man in front of him may have appeared out of nowhere but he did not care. This man was just another person who hated him. The boy looked at the old man to see the usual scolding expression upon his face.
The old man was smiling at him. The boy was a little taken back by what he saw, very few people smiled when they saw him. The old man was wearing a robe in the same green as the school uniform. The robes appeared to be full of pockets though, which puzzled the boy.
"Old man, what are you doing here?"
The boy gave in to the old man. He decided to pass the time by talking to this peculiar fellow. Anything was better than an English lesson.
"I am here to make you and offer. That coin in your hand for the contents of this pocket." He gestured towards a pocket on his left, his wrinkled hand being exposed to the sun as he did so, "I do not wish to trick you, Shou."
Shou was surprised. How did someone know his name? This man was definitely a strange one. Shou kept quiet. He thought about the value of the coin in his hand. What could it get him? A cheeseburger? A go on an arcade game? He decided that he would risk it. After all, he waited every day for an opportunity like this. It would be a chance to end his boredom.
"Deal."
And with that word, that word that takes merely 2 seconds to say, he took his first step towards his fate. This marks the first of the 24 Hours. At exactly 9:32am on May the Fifth, a lonely Monday morning, he began his destiny.
He handed the man the coin. In return he got two boxes, each one around the size of a pack of playing cards. He wondered why the man gave this to him, but as he faced towards the school he always walked to, he forgot about it. He placed the boxes in his right pocket, away from the flowers.
"Aokisa Shou, you are in a lot of trouble."
The teacher said the same thing every time Shou entered the class late. Shou did not care. He took his seat at the back of the class and looked out the window. He saw where he was standing a few minutes ago. He did not care.
It was time for break. People rarely left the class and those who did merely visited another class to see their friends. Shou found it boring. He reached into his pocket and pulled out one of the two boxes. The box was made of wood, handmade by the look of it. It was a shoddy piece of work. He opened it.
And took out a ring and a piece of paper.
The ring looked like it was made of pure gold, it was a magnificent sight. He wondered why the man gave it to him. He decided to wear it for now and sell it later. He would then use the money to do whatever he wanted. He inspected the piece of paper. It looked worthless to him. He did not even bother turning it over.
Eager to see what was in the other box, he opened it and found just a deck of cards. He felt a little disheartened after seeing the beautiful ring on his finger but he did not care. Playing cards are fun.
He called over a few of the boys who were chatting among themselves nearby. He decided that he wanted money, and he knew how to get it.
"Let's gamble. I'll pay you double your bet if you get it right."
"What's the game?"
"Higher or Lower."
He knew how to cheat. He did it to some kids at his old school but got busted. He had checked the bottom ten cards of the pack and smiled. Diversion was key in this.
He dealt out one card to the table, the Jack of Hearts. He knew what they would say as soon as it was revealed. Nobody would guess that it was higher. The leader of the boys placed a bet on the table. It was the same as he had given the man earlier that morning, over double what he had on him. The word lower came out of the boys mouth just as expected.
Shou moved his left hand off the deck, causing the shining ring to dazzle the boys in front of him. While they noticed it, he dealt a card from the bottom of the pack, the King of Clubs. His plan went perfectly.
Every few deals he would let the Rugby Members win. He wanted them to keep playing so he could gain more money. By the end of break, he had over ten times as much as he started with that morning. Lesson started as normal. He cared not about Shakespeare or The Tempest. He hated school.
He was bored. He waited for the lunch bell to ring as he counted the money he had. It was enough to buy a new computer game! He eagerly awaited the lunch bell to ring. And eventually, it did.
"Ermm, sorry about this Aokisa-Kun. I noticed that you got hold of some money this break time."
The girl who always sat in front of him spoke. Konhara Akira, the pride of the classroom. She was always kind and so was voted to be head of the classroom earlier that year. Shou did not care. He never did. Her purple hair and purple eyes were complimentary to each other. While she was not smart, she was popular with most people in the class.
"Yeah, I did. I'm not returning it."
He was blunt. He knew how this kind of thing turned out.
"I'm not asking that!" She blushed. It was one of the many things people liked about her. "I-I-I... I forgot my money today. Can I borrow some from you?"
As he opened his mouth to say something really rude to her, he was stopped. Instead, some other words came out.
"Okay. I'll give you some."
He could not believe what he had said. He hated those who were kind. Why? He did not know. And after that moment, he never knew again. But what he said did not seem natural. It was as if someone else spoke in his stead.
"R-r-r-really?" She did not believe what she heard. She never thought that he could be kind. Then again, neither did he. "Thank you!"
With his words, even though they were not his own, he was obligated to hand over some money. He reached into his pocket and took out enough for a school lunch.
And the flowers.
He was surprised they had not withered. He truly was. He forgot about them but they looked as fresh as he picked them. She noticed them and took a step back.
"I-I-I... I didn't know you felt that way!"
He wanted to say it was a misunderstanding but the words could not come to him. He handed her the money and the flowers and left, leaving her dumbfounded. As soon as he out of sight, he broke into a sprint and ran to the bench where he usually sat in the mornings.
"What the hell is wrong with me!" He screamed to himself. Nobody heard him, or rather, nobody cared. His shouts were nothing next to the daily lives of the football team practising near him.
"Nothing."
The word echoed in his mind. He felt scared. Someone was talking to him from within his mind. He hated that.
"Who are you?" He yelled at himself.
"I am Sora. I am an angel."
He thought it was a joke. He thought that someone had placed a walkie-talkie in his pocket or something. He frantically dug through his pockets looking for it. He did this for five minutes before giving up.
"An angel? Prove it." He began to question this angel. Who would believe in them?
"As you wish."
The words resonated in his mind. In front of him stood a woman, a young woman dressed in white. He blonde hair flowed like a waterfall and he face looked as beautiful as some of the models he occasionally saw in magazines. She had appeared from nowhere. For a short amount of time, he was too overcome with shock to move.
"What are you doing here?" He yelled. He still did not like this. The wings on this woman's back were too much for him.
"I am here on a mission. There is a boy at this school who thinks nobody cares about him. My mission is to prove him wrong."
Shou was dumbfounded. An angel was here to prove him wrong. He thought he must have snapped.
"What if I don't want your help? What if I want some peace?"
He wanted to get away. Angels never just appear in front of you for no reason. Why choose him?
"The ring. At midnight, I will go no matter what you ask of me. If at some point during the next day, exactly 24 hours after receiving the ring, you take it off and give it to someone as a present, my work will be done. But of you are wearing it at 9:32am tomorrow, you will find yourself without any memory of me and will be returned to before you got the ring."
He was still dumbfounded. It was a very complicated situation. Still, one day of being nice could not hurt. He decided to follow through with what Sora said.
"Okay. But if you fail your mission, you will have to give me a lot of money."
Sora smiled, "You will have the ring. And I will make it so that you can sell it for enough money to buy that car you read about in the magazine. Is that enough?"
Shou decided to try his luck one more time.
"And you must promise that you will not change anything from now on. No more flowers, no more making me say things I don't want to and no more controlling what I do!"
"I promise."
And at that point in time, he repeated himself.
"Deal."
And so the path to destiny began. Fate had started. But before you read on, just remember that Sora never controlled Shou after that. From here on out, he made all the choices. Sora had already set all the pieces in motion.
Lunch ended soon after his discussion with Sora. Sora went back into Shou's mind and remained there as Shou returned to lessons. He could not stop thinking of all the riches we would have the following day. He smiled at the thought.
"A-A-Aokisa-Kun?"
Akira spoke to him partway through the lesson, they were meant to be discussing algebra but Shou did not want to. Her voice was as timid as always.
"C-c-can I borrow some piper?"
"Piper?"
Akira looked really sad, she blushed as Shou repeated her faux pas. In her shyness, she had made a mistake.
"I-I-I... I mean paper!"
She sounded like she was about to cry, she began to turn away from Shou but before the tears could rain from the clouds known as her eyes, She felt a tap on her back. Shou held out a piece of paper he had found in his pocket, the same piece that was in the box that morning.
"Thank you." Once again, she was struck for words. She pinched herself to check if all this was real.
Class was boring for the next few minutes. Just more and more algebra. Shou was not an idiot, just lazy. He could do most of the stuff on the board and did not care about the rest. Near the end of the lesson, something else did happen that even caused Shou to care.
"...Equals 27x. Konhara, please tell the class how to do the next question."
Most of the class looked towards the usually energetic Akira, but she did not seem to notice. She seemed to be reading something.
"Akira!"
Akira looked up, she seemed a little oblivious to her surroundings. She looked up from something on her desk.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?"
The class fell silent. The boy behind her was worried. As the teacher began searching for the words to express how he felt, Shou spoke to Sora within his mind.
"You promised not to do anything!"
"I didn't. You didn't check the other side."
Shou was still annoyed at Sora despite what she said. However, the class became a little more active.
"Akira! Because you are not usually like this, I will excuse it if you answer the question!"
Akira stood up quickly, and after a few seconds, she came up with an answer to the question on the board.
"Y = 5X + 7. Sorry for not answering right away."
Akira began to sit down but the girl next to her grabbed the note she had been reading and stopped Akira from reclaiming it.
"Sir, she was reading this."
The teacher walked over to Akira's table and took the note. Upon reading the contents, he began to smile and used the same evil grin he used on me whenever I misbehaved.
"If this was more important to you than the lesson, I'll read it out in front of everyone!"
Akira begged the teacher not to do so but he did so anyway. It was at this point that Shou realised he was not the only one bullied after all. This made him both very happy and very sad at the same time.
"Well: 'To the beauty who has eyes like gems, glittering whenever I see them. You are a treasure to this world and a blessing to all around you. I am glad I've known you these past few years and I will like to walk you home today. Meet me at the gates if you're interested.' A very mysterious message there Akira, I wonder which boy is paying so much attention to you."
At that point, every boy in the class seemed to be looking in any other direction but Akira. Shou, however, was focussed on the paper in the teachers hand, unlike the others who turned away.
"Well, because of this outburst, it's too late to finish all the other questions on the board. If you haven't done them, I'm setting them as homework. Class dismissed."
As Shou left, he heard a few whispers coming from the group of girls gossiping about the love letter.
"I wonder who it is who wrote that letter..."
"I think I saw Aokisa hand her a piece of paper earlier."
"Eww... No way. He's too gross for something like that."
"I'm too what now?"
Shou had crept up behind the talker and in that moment, every one of the girls screamed and ran. Shou and even Sora suspected them of going away to gossip about the letter even more. Luckily, as he was walking to the main gates, he heard some talking from the nearby toilets.
"...He was probably just delivering the message. He's too weird for stuff like that anyway. He probably doesn't care about anyone."
Shou felt a little sad that that was the only way he was perceived. He was too caught up in thinking about the letter that he forgot that he was walking so fast. Usually it took him ten minutes to leave the building. On that day, it only took him 2.
Shou walked through the gates and out of curiosity looked left. He saw the last in the trio of flowers that he had found that morning while searching for the coin. That seemed like ages ago. Shou wondered if he made the right choices back then.
"...Aokisa-Kun?"
A surprised sound came from behind him. He knew what had happened and cursed his foolishness. He was right by the gate when he would usually be walking home. The flowers from earlier did not help his case. He turned around.
"Hey Konhara-Chan. Are you waiting for that guy?"
Akira was right behind him. She did not seem to hear the end of the sentence as she was busy looking at the flower Shou had been looking at just a few seconds ago.
"It's so cute!"
Shou looked at the flower again, the natural beauty of it reminded him of the girl right next to him.
"Ohh, I guess it is."
Shou stopped caring about the flower. He did not know that Akira would get distracted by cute things so easily. He wondered what he did not know about her. Akira turned to face him.
"I'm sorry, are you what?"
Shou smiled, then blamed Sora for it. He sighed and looked right at Akira.
"Are you ready to go, Akira-Chan?"
Without hesitation, Akira responded. Shou was still wondering how he did not know so much about her despite always being next to each other. He did not even know her birthday.
"Okay, Aokisa-Kun!"
As the two of them walked down the hill together under the blooming flowers, Shou got a strange feeling that a bunch of girls from his class had fainted in disbelief. The thought of so much confusion made Shou chuckle. Sora smiled as well, seeing how different this man was to the boy she had met that morning.
The two of them passed by the the shopping district together. On the way, they had not spoken at all on the way but as they passed, Shou got a feeling to ask Akira something.
"Hey, want to spend the rest of the day together? I know some nice places to eat."
In honesty, he was just bored and after a burger but when he looked at Akira, he felt like he wanted to get to know her a little bit more. Besides, he would always get this day back later when Sora left. Akira, however, saw this as him asking her on a date.
"That sounds lovely Shou-Kun!"
Shou was not sure what was more surprising, the sudden change in atmosphere to a really happy one or the sudden usage of his first name. [Editors note, in Japan people are referred to by their surnames unless they give permission to use the first name.] He decided to kill the time waiting for 9:32am the next day with her, as it would be more fun that just going on the arcade machines.
The pair started by going shopping, Shou did not mind shopping as much as he thought he would. He was surprised that he was not bored, as it seemed like he got along well with her and they had similar interests. All day he wondered about her, as she would try on some bizarre stuff that was usually cosplay related.
That evening, he took her into his favourite restaurant, a coffee shop called Cuppa C. [Editors Note, Cuppa C appears in The Chosen, Katsuro, Sors Castrum and will appear in many more projects. All under the same guise.] He ordered some chips and a couple of burgers and had a chat with the girl who dared to sit opposite him.
"So, Akira-Chan, why is it that you love cosplay so much?"
Akira looked like Shou said the wrong thing. Shou noticed instantly that cosplay was very important to her.
"I like cosplay because I get to be the people I admire most. Also, it's cute."
Shou agreed with her and they spent the next hour laughing, talking and eating together. During this time, he realised how much he had spent on coffee and cosplay items. He barely had enough left for the game he wanted. He decided to walk there with the girl he had grown to like.
On the way, he saw a young boy crying with an ice-cream cone in his hand but the ice cream on the floor. He knew that if he bought him a new one then he would not have enough for the game he wanted. Shou decided that seeing as he only had one day like this before he forgot everything, he might as well just do the morally right thing.
Shou bought three ice-creams. One for the boy, one for Akira and one for himself. He was down to the last few coins left, less than he started the day with before he made the deal. He knew that he would not have enough money to waste any like this ever again, but then he realised that he was going to be rich the next day so felt happy.
As the sun began to set, Shou and Akira walked across the road to the park, hand in hand, and sat on the bench there. Shou often came here and knew that it was a lovely place for a conversation. He was still puzzled about one last thing, though.
"Akira-Chan, why did you agree to this so easily?"
Akira was a little confused at the question, so he repeated himself. After a few minutes, she responded.
"Well, I've always been near you in class," she began to blush, "And I always thought you were cool. I could sense some sort of beauty inside you. I guess I would have said yes to you at any time. It's was not just the flowers or the letter, it was only you that made me want to come here with you."
Shou felt something inside his chest grip him. He wondered, was this love?
"Shou-Kun, can you tell me a little about why you hide your true self from everyone."
Until that point on that day, Shou never realised that this him that he had been since he spoke with Sora was the true Shou. He thought he was just pretending up until then. He never realised that he was such a delinquent because of what happened until then.
"6 years ago, my mother died. It traumatised both my dad and myself. I lashed out at school and got suspended. Dad kicked me out on that day. He told me to move away, to another town and I did. I was happy to get away from him. He never told me that he loved me and he never will. He sends me a monthly cheque covering all the necessitates. I guess that made me feel lonely, having no family or friends."
Shou could feel tears running down his face, he always acted tough so he would not cry but this girl that he sat with brought it all out. She lent him a shoulder and he cried for a long time. When he stopped crying, he embraced Akira. Together, they hugged for hours. The sun slowly set on this scene but Shou never wanted it to stop.
When it was dark, he looked Akira in the eyes and spoke.
"I will see you tomorrow morning."
He fumbled in his pocket for a present to give her but could only find the Cards from earlier.
"Sorry it's not much. I hope to do this again."
He walked her across the road and began to wave goodbye to her. He watched her for a bit as she began to leave. Sora smiled at him as she saw this scene. Sora felt happy at this point.
Shou sat on the bench and looked up at the stars. He looked down at his ring and wondered, should he give up fortune for what he felt today? In less than 12 hours, he would forget everything that happened. He began to have doubts for the first time since seeing the ring.
"I can't believe I dropped it."
Shou opened his eyes. It was very late. He realised he must have been asleep for a few hours on the bench. He turned towards Sora, who commented on the time being only 10pm. Shou saw a familiar figure in the distance, looking for something.
"I can't believe I lost his present."
Akira. She was looking for something. He could see the cards on the middle of the road and was going to go and pick them up when he remembered that this park was often used for drag races. He watched as Akira walked into the middle of the road, the darkness above preventing her from seeing that it was a road, and she began to pick up the deck.
Shou saw a light coming at a very fast speed towards her and before he knew it, he was running towards her. He pushed her at the last second and got hit by the car instead. He could feel the bones in his leg break as he hit the ground.
Akira looked at the figure that had saved her in horror as the rain landed on his once perfect skin. Blood trickled down his face as she held him close. Sora broke her promise by making an ambulance appear before it was too late, but Akira never knew that. She helped the unconscious boy who gave his body to protect her into the ambulance.
11:50pm. Shou could not open his eyes because of the pain. his left leg felt dreadful. He somehow was able to tilt his head to the left and open his eyes slightly. His wet, bloody body was in too much pain for anything else.
"Shou, it's almost time for me to go. Looking around the room, I may have fulfilled my mission."
"Sora," Shou mustered all his strength into speaking, "Thank you for today."
And with that, Sora disappears from our tale. Shou fell back asleep at the stroke of twelve.
He had already has his operation of his foot. His real one was replaced by a false one. He did not know about it until morning though, as the hospital could not wake him.
"Shou, I'll be back later."
The clock on the table next to the bed said that it was 9:00am. The voice of the girl made him smile. Her felt something warm against his cheek and then heard a door shut.
He woke up suddenly. He saw his bloody clothes on the top of a chair nearby. He saw the torn cards on the table near the chair and finally, he saw the ring on his finger. He did not want to ring any more. A nurse walked in.
"Aokisa Shou? I'm the nurse. You have had your foot amputated and replaced. You are excused from school for a month while you recover here."
Shou did not care.
"Can I walk?"
The nurse did not know what he was on about, the force of the incident was too much for him to walk for at least another few days.
Shou did not care. He stood up and felt the force of the pain. If only by miracle, he managed to start walking, despite the burning agony in his legs. He did not care. In ten minutes, he would forget everything and the world would go back to as it was before he met Sora. He did not want that.
Akira gazed out of the window. The gossip about her was blooming, as many people saw her with Shou.
"Did you hear that Konhara is going out with Aokisa?"
"Did you hear that Aokisa got hit by a car yesterday?"
"OMG! I hope she's okay."
She wanted to cry. He got hurt because of him. 9:28. Lesson would start in two minutes. She did not want to be here, she wanted to be with Shou.
A woman walked into class. She had blonde hair and looked like she was in her early twenties. She went unnoticed by the rest of the class but slowly approached the girl who was on the brink of tears.
"Akira, go to the school gates now or you'll never feel happy again."
It sounded like a threat but Akira could see something in the distance. She did not care what it was. She ran as fast as she can to it. She tripped twice but she did not care. She had to get there as soon as she could.
At the school gates, she saw a man stagger through the last few steps in agony. She could not say anything, seeing Shou in so much pain.
"Shou-Kun..."
She dropped to her knees, the bell rang from the school but she did not care. Already a commotion was rising in the classroom. Some people thought she was crying in the toilets, some people thought she was embarrassed of the rumours.
"Akira!" Shou dropped down on his good knee in front of her. The pain had finally stopped him. The two of them looked each other in the eyes and finally, after what seemed like an eternity he said, "I love you."
And they kissed, in the arms of the one they loved on the most difficult morning of their life they kissed. As they kissed, Shou felt the last of his strength leave him and he fell down yet again. She let him sleep on her lap. She looked at her watch. 9:31am on May the Fifth. She would remember that moment forever.
She felt something cold enter her hand from the hand that was still holding Shou's. She looked at it and saw a ring. It was beautiful. She put it on and never took it off. As the clock turned forward another minute, an extraordinary thing happened.
Nothing.
He had chosen her over fortune and body.
"And that, Sora, is how I met mummy."
It was12 years later. While he could not walk for another 3 months, he was always with Akira. And, soon after graduating together, the two of them got married. He got a job as a shop assistant in Cuppa C to support his wife through Med School. He was the manager of the local Cuppa C and she was a doctor when they had their daughter 7 years before.
Akira thought that the name was chosen because it complimented Shou, as his name meant Flying and their daughters meant Flying as well. Shou chose it because he believed that his daughter was an angel.
After the story, the three of them played a few card games. No matter how torn or stained they were, they always used the same deck.
"Y = 5X + 7. Sorry for not answering right away."
Intro
Hi, welcome to this new Blog.
I am the same person from Randomoscity Central and so if anyone were to read the posts there then you may find a few repeats. (I think they're alright but maybe a little too bizarre... In honesty the blog is just so I could format my Facebook Notes...)
A few things:
1. This blog is ONLY for my stories and a few greetings posts. I may include the background and any stories that are made to follow up the story in another post. For example:
Post 1: Katsuro*
Post 2: Katsuro Background.
Or something similar.
2. I accept all criticisms. Well, I think I do. I may get upset if you just say: 'This is rubbish!' or something. If you say: 'I don't like this, you don't really get enough of a feel for the characters and the storyline is too confusing.' or something along those lines, I will think on how to make everything better.
3. Reposting. I don't mind if you repost everything I post. I only ask that you give me credit. If you wish to make a sequel** or just rewrite a story, it's fine but please link it to the original story. If you wanted to make a sequel to Katsuro then add a comment onto the Katsuro Post telling me where to find it, what it is and everything.
4. Naming. I use Japanese Names. I just Google Japanese names and find them wherever I can. Why? Because I am a fan of Anime and because I think that the names sound cooler. In reposts, you may change the names to something more local. Also, you'll find that I reuse the following names:
Katsu Aoki,
Kajiamaru,
Michiko,
Moriko,
Mizuki,
Josh,
And there may be others. In my most recent story (Written the day before this blog was created) I named the main character Aokisa Shou, which is a spoof of Aoki from Katsu Aoki.
*Katsuro is a story that has been started but is unfinished. It is set in the world of Gaia, parallel to Terra.
**I probably will not accept the sequel as an official one. But I would like credit for the original idea. Ohh, and I doubt that you will make sequels.
And that is all. I may/may not use labels.
